- SuperMac Announces Advanced Graphics Cards for Color Publishing & Prepress
-
- Thunder/8 & Thunder/24 are Upgradable and 68040 Ready
-
- Sunnyvale, CA - (July 30, 1991) - SuperMac Technology™ today introduced a new
- family of 8- and 24-bit workstation-class color graphics cards for the
- Macintosh® that are 4.5 times faster than the current performance leader —
- SuperMac's Spectrum/24™ PDQ. Thunder/8™ and Thunder/24™ are single-slot
- graphics cards designed specifically for demanding graphics professionals using
- high-end Macintosh IIci and IIfx systems with 19" and 21" large-screen displays
- for color-publishing and prepress applications.
-
- Thunder is SuperMac's first card to take advantage of the company's unique
- OpenSlot™ connector, a feature that enables unlimited upgrade potential for
- system (QuickDraw™ and QuickTime™) and applications software acceleration
- features to be piggybacked onto the card. The cards are optimized for use with
- upcoming Motorola 68040 architectures, to deliver the most powerful prepress
- solution of the future.
-
- Both versions of Thunder are fully compatible with Apple's new System 7.0
- operating system and will ship in September 1991. U.S. Suggested Retail Prices
- for Thunder/8 and Thunder/24 are $1,899 and $4,999 respectively.
-
- Breakthrough Performance
-
- Thunder provides the fastest QuickDraw acceleration available on the Macintosh
- by using SuperMac's third-generation Application Specific Integrated Circuit
- (ASIC) design. This technology combines a new video controller and
- custom-designed pixel accelerator with an advanced memory architecture. The
- new pixel-accelerator chip design processes up to half a billion pixels per
- second to optimize the performance of video on the Macintosh. As a result,
- users will experience split-second response from popular color publishing
- applications such as QuarkXPress, PageMaker, Photoshop, and PixelPaint
- Professional®.
-
- “With Thunder, graphic designers can spend their time creating — not waiting,”
- said Christopher Kryzan, SuperMac’s director of product marketing. "SuperMac's
- philosophy is to continue to extend the limits of the Macintosh, bringing
- exceptional graphics performance to the people who need it most — graphics
- professionals whose livelihoods depend on the power of the tools they use."

- Pathway to the Future
-
- The OpenSlot connector, an integral part of every Thunder card, makes it easy
- and cost effective to upgrade and enhance its capabilities in the future. As a
- result, resellers can customize a solution tailored to their customers' needs
- and end users are assured that their investment is protected.
-
- "SuperMac's Thunder cards offer the best graphics performance available —
- something that is essential to our most serious color-publishing customers —
- and provides us with an opportunity to ensure that our customers’ future needs
- are met," said John Sykes, business development manager and co-owner of
- Computer Attic, a reseller of high-end color solutions, in Palo Alto, CA .
- "OpenSlot will allow my customers to add specific features such as image
- compression or applications acceleration as they require."
-
- Thunder also includes expansion capability for up to 8 Mb of tightly coupled,
- on-board GWorld display memory, for faster manipulation of large color images.
- GWorld memory lets users add on-board dynamic RAM (DRAM) to boost performance
- of applications that use off-screen bitmaps. Standard SIMM memory modules can
- be easily installed by end users as their needs grow. SuperMac has made these
- standard 32-bit SIMM modules available for a suggested retail price of $749 (4
- Mb) and $1,449 (8 Mb).
-
- Display Flexibility
-
- Thunder supports more displays than any competing Macintosh color graphics
- cards. Thunder/24 provides more than 16.7 million colors on 12"–21" displays
- from SuperMac and other manufacturers, for creating continuous-tone artwork or
- photocomposites. Thunder/8 provides 256 colors on displays up to 21 inches for
- creating spot-color artwork, drafting design concepts, and manipulating
- layouts.
-
- Advanced Functionality
-
- Both Thunder/24 and Thunder/8 include SuperMatch™ System Software, the
- industry’s leading color-fidelity solution, to help ensure that on-screen
- colors closely match those in desktop prints; SuperVideo™ 3.0, a powerful
- display- management utility, which provides interactive setup, screen grabber
- and screen saver features; pan and zoom in hardware for instant enlargements of
- graphic details; and Virtual Desktop™ of up to eight square feet (4096 x 1536
- pixels) for poster-size projects.
-
- SuperMac designs products that accelerate or enhance the performance of Apple’s
- system-software standards. The company is a leading supplier of graphics
- peripherals to the Macintosh color desktop-publishing, color prepress, and
- digital video markets. SuperMac’s products have received numerous editorial
- awards for quality and innovation, including the National Software Testing
- Laboratory’s designation as best large-screen Macintosh display system in April
- 1991. Its product lines include color graphics cards; 16", 19", and 21" color
- displays; image compression products; and digital video solutions.
